Management and Staff

Key Team

In this section, name the people who will play a major part of running your Community ReUse Center day-to-day. Describe their roles and what makes them qualified to fill these positions.

Questions
  1. Who is your core staff?

  2. What experience (education, employment history, skills) do they have that makes them great for the job?

Tips

Examples: Executive Director, Finance Director, Program Director, Retail Manager

Finger Lakes ReUse's Story

We started with four staffers, who had experience with other local nonprofits and retail operations. In five years, we employed 14 people. That number has quadrupled and we are continuing to grow.

Board of Directors

List the members of your Board of Directors, and describe their background and experience.

Questions
  1. Who is on your Board of Directors, and what experience do they bring that makes them great for the board?

  2. Are any of your board members active in or representative of the communities you hope to serve?

Tips

Your board of directors may evolve out of your original planning team.
Consider if your board will serve in an advisory capacity or if you require a more active, operational board.

Staff

Write down your plans for staffing the Community ReUse Center. You don't necessarily need to know who will fill the positions, but you should have an idea of how many employees you will need. If you plan to participate in any special employment programs (for example, work-study students from a local college, or work experience programs with social service agencies), include that here. You should also mention whether any positions will be volunteer, what kind of hiring timeline you're looking at, and whether you'll be hiring contractors for any particular roles.

Questions
  1. How many people will you have working in your Community ReUse Center's office? How many people will you hire to help process donated materials? How many will you have working the cash register?

  2. Will these jobs be full-time? If not, how many Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) positions will you create?

Tips

Examples: Volunteer Coordinator, Sales Associate, Driver, Custodian, IT Administrator, Development Associate

Finger Lakes ReUse's Story

We staff our Community ReUse Center through a combination of paid employees, work-study students from local colleges, volunteers, and apprentices from our job skills training program.

Volunteers

Explain how you will use volunteers and in what capacity.

Questions
  1. Are there specific startup jobs that are short-term and suited for volunteers?

  2. Are there organizations that you can partner with whose members can provide regular, reliable volunteer labor (ie, Saturday mornings, a monthly Thursday evening).
